Shaping the

Supply Chain Future

Greater Richmond's Logistics History

History and geography have positioned Greater Richmond, Virginia, at the nexus of the logistical and supply-chain revolution of the 21st century. Since 1607, Virginia has always been an early adopter of new forms of transportation: developing its plantation economy around abundant waterways, constructing the Kanawha-Haxall Canal into the interior, building railroads at the earliest stages of industrialization, and later, installing the interstate highway system, world-class airports and unparalleled seaport facilities.

Today, the digital broadband and wireless communication networks lacing the state are paving the way for future forms of commerce.

Greater Richmond leads the transformation of the logistics industry through the application of information technology and the telecommunication industry. Our companies are devising new ways to identify, track, record, monitor, and analyze movement of goods and materials.

Understanding the past and committing to the future make Greater Richmond and the Commonwealth of Virginia experienced partners on which new and existing business can depend. The information that follows demonstrates how Greater Richmond is actively engaged in this economic transformation.

About Greater Richmond Logistics

Greater Richmond Logistics, a quarterly website/newsletter supported by the Greater Richmond Partnership, tracks new logistics-related technologies, products and businesses originating from the Richmond region. The publication has two goals:

1.   To promote the building of new business relationships and foster an exchange of ideas within the region that will lead to greater creativity and innovation; and

2.   To show industry players and service providers outside the region that Greater Richmond possesses not only the physical infrastructure required to maintain a world-class logistical operation here but a wealth of human capital and supporting industries.

The website has two main functions: to archive the newsletters, and to house the Greater Richmond Logistics Directory.
